Club trips are usually to rivers in and around Yorkshire, occasionally surfing at Scarborough or Saltburn, or some times further afield. Depends really ! Have a look at the trip reports section to get an idea of where we've been recently.

Essential Kit List

Pool Sessions

For pool sessions - your usual swimming kit. We can provide everything else !
Some people prefer to wear a T-Shirt, but that's up to you.
Thursday night polo sessions, it is advisable to wear a rash vest or T-Shirt (Polo rules say you should).

Sunday trips.....

  • Warm clothes you don't mind getting wet - NO COTTON. (Primark sell good thermals)
Ideally, old tracksuit bottoms, thermals, woollen jumpers, etc.
  • An old pair of trainers/wetsuit boots to protect your feet.
  • A towel
  • A warm drink and some food.
  • Money to buy beer/food (if available)
  • We can provide canoeing gear such as cag/helmet/buoyancy aid/etc

It is worth remembering that you may well get cold and wet, so having warm clothes to change into, and some food and drink can make this a more bearable experience. Some of the places we go do not have cash machines or McDonalds, so it's not always possible to buy stuff once we've left Leeds.

Weekends away

As for Sunday trips, but add some outdoor gear, like

  • Tent/Sleeping Bag/Ability to pull
  • More warm clothes - including a Raincoat & Beanie
  • More food/beer
  • Money to buy more food and more beer

Socials

Every Monday we go for a drink in the pub, after the Pool Session - so from about 10.30pm onwards.
Weekly large ones in Leeds are organised by the Social Sex for Wednesdays. Weekends away usually involve copious amounts of "intra-club socialising" too.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is this Chapel Place ?

It's an old Methodist church where we keep all the Canoe Club equipment.

Where is it ?

On campus, near the Sports Centre, by the security entrance/exit barrier to campus.
Show me a map.

Where is the Holt Park Swimming pool ?

Have a look at this map.

Where is the Canoe Club noticeboard ?

Upstairs in the Union building. Take the stairs either side of you immediatly as you enter the Union. Go through the double doors at the top, turn right and it's immediately on your right, at about waist high level. Helpfully identified by the "Canoe Club" sign on it.

Where is the Canoe Club pigeonhole ?

In the Sports Office. It's the one cunningly marked "Canoe".

Where is the Sports Office ?

Also upstairs in the Union. Turn right through the double doors, continue through the next set. Then carry on down the corridor and around the corridor. Through the grey doors and up the stairs.

Can I keep my boat in the Chapel ?

Yes, if you're a member of the club. Contact the club captain to sort it out.

How much does it cost to be a member of the club ?

28 quid. That includes free use of boats and kit, BCU affiliation, insurance, and some cover for equipment maintenance.
River trips cost up to a fiver to cover petrol, and pool sessions are only a pound. Bargain!

I've never paddled before can I still come along ?

Absolutely. Many of our members join with no experience - we have lots of people ready to teach you the basic skills on the path to Paddling Enlightenment.

I can't swim. Can I still join ?

Sadly not. The ability to swim 50m is the only requirement we have.

Ok, if you still have a query, now you can send an email.
