Mondays

Pool Session - Skills

Practice your kayaking skills; we welcome all levels of ability from beginner to expert. Meet at the Edge pool on campus at 9:00pm.

Details

What's Happening?

The Monday night pool session is for practising those essential kayaking skills:

  • Getting in a boat without falling in the pool.

  • Getting back out of a boat without falling in the pool again!

  • Paddling in a straight line.

  • Capsizing.

  • Rolling.

  • Meeting other kayakers.

Pretty much everyone comes to the Monday night sessions to meet up, find out what's going on and get in a boat.

Every Monday we also go for a drink in the pub, after the pool session - so from about 10.30pm onwards.

Essential Kit

For pool sessions bring your usual swimming kit. We can provide everything else! Some people prefer to wear a rash vest or T-Shirt, but that's up to you.

How To Get There

The Edge is the new sports center opened in the heart of campus.

How Much Does It Cost?

You must hold an Edge basic membership to get into the pool, which is £70 for most people and free for freshers living in halls of residence. You pay nothing to the club. Yes for freshers pool sessions are completely FREE!

Wednesdays

Club Social

Practice your drinking skills; we welcome all levels of ability from beginner to expert. Meet at the Terrace on campus, usually around 8:00pm.

Details

What's Happening?

Get a drink. Find a wife. Or a husband, depending on your preference.

Essential Kit

Anything with the Queen's head on it, or the words "Visa" or "Mastercard".

How To Get There

The Terrace is in the Student Union building, past the information desk. Don't go downstairs, that's the Old Bar, and we're not in there.

How Much Does It Cost?

You'll find out when you check your bank balance on Thursday.

Thursdays

Pool Session - Canoe Polo

Practice your polo skills; this is a proper sport! Meet at the Edge on campus at 9:00pm.

Details

What's Happening?

You get in a boat with a paddle and a ball. Don't paddle with the ball and don't throw your paddle. Score more goals than the opposition or die trying. Grrr.

Essential Kit

It's advisable to wear a rash vest or T-Shirt (polo rules say you should). We'll provide everything else you need.

How To Get There

The Edge is the new sports center opened in the heart of campus.

How Much Does It Cost?

As with the Monday pool sessions, you must hold an Edge basic membership to get into the pool, which is £70 for most people and free for freshers living in halls of residence.

Sundays

River Trip

Practice your river skills; find the whitewater! Meet outside the chapel to load boats on cars at 9:00am.

Details

What's Happening?

River trips are usually to rivers in and around Yorkshire, occasionally surfing at Scarborough or Saltburn, or sometimes further afield. Depends really!

Essential Kit

  • Warm clothes you don't mind getting wet - NO COTTON. (Primark sell good thermals)
Ideally, old tracksuit bottoms, thermals, woollen jumpers, etc.

  • An old pair of trainers/wetsuit boots to protect your feet.

  • A towel

  • A warm drink and some food (including a little bit of chocolate for the river).

  • Money to buy beer/food (if available).

  • We can provide canoeing gear such as cag/helmet/buoyancy aid etc.

It is worth remembering that you may well get cold and wet, so having warm clothes to change into and some food and drink to get you going again can make this a more bearable experience. Some of the places we go do not have cash machines or McDonalds, so it's not always possible to buy stuff once we've left Leeds.

How To Get There

The Chapel is just across the road from the Edge sports center. It's not used as a chapel anymore, it's where we keep our boats. But it still looks like a chapel!

How Much Does It Cost?

£7 to £10, dependent largely on how far afield we're going.

Weekends Away

These river trips are just like the Sunday river trips, only bigger, so add some outdoor gear:

  • Tent / sleeping bag / ability to pull.

  • More warm clothes - including a waterproof and windproof coat and a beanie hat.

  • More food / beer.

  • Money to buy more food and more beer.

Weekends away usually involve copious amounts of "intra-club socialising" too.

Borrowing Club Kit

Club members are welcome to borrow club equipment for private trips. For full details please read Hiring Club Equipment.

Please contact the Gear And Safety Sec if you'd like to borrow anything.
