The Tyne Tour has the honour of being the first Weekend Meeting of the Paddling Season, and also happens to be one of the best. Friday night the tents are pitched, and the cold braved, getting ready for the day ahead. Saturday brings about a paddle on the North Tyne, including the infamous Warden Gorge. Huge wavetrains down a narrowing section provide some of the most fun you can have on the river. After all this, it's time for the Celidh, where it's time to forget about those aches and pains of the day and to drink and dance yourself silly. Sunday morning consists of whatever people feel like doing! Usually another trip to the Warden Gorge. This weekend is an absolute must attend event for all members, and is a great way to get to know your fellow paddlers. Miss it, Miss Out!
Paddle a funny looking boat as fast as you can down a river. They have wings you know. Or you could just come for the party...
Every January after exams, the club hits the Lake District for a weekend of paddling and mayhem. Staying at a large wooden hut in Spark Bridge, which is just across the road from the local pub, we let the mayhem begin! Last year included a paddle on the Grade III/IV Leven for the more advanced people, and a trip down the Grade II/III Crake and the Upper Leven for all our beginners. This is THE best way to celebrate finishing your January exams. What could be better than going away for a weekend, cramming into a hut with 70 or so of your best mates, getting drunk at the local, then paddling some top notch Lake District rivers? I can't think of anything...
A freestyle kayaking competition and partay of epic proportions organised by yours truly, LUUCC. It's so big we couldn't fit it all in here so we gave it its very own website so the world may know its name. This is the event that the Competition Secs pour the very essence of their being into. Build it, and they will come! And lo, students from all over the land descend upon Nottingham's Holme Pierrepont (HPP) each March to compete at all levels for ridiculously awesome kayaking prizes. Beginners get the best prizes, so what the hell are you waiting for?!
Held near Doncaster, BUSA Polo has a whole weekend of inter-varsity polo competition to take part in and plenty of uni teams to bin. It's a camping trip and there's usually a party going on too, so bring your team spirit and some mixers. Socials
Wednesdays will never be the same again. The club meets up in the Terrace for drinks, and if the Social Sex have been busy (and they usually have!) we move on to another venue. There's loads of things to do in Leeds and heading out to a bar, a club, an ice rink, bowling alley or the cinema are all pretty common. And if the Social Sex have got really creative we'll be on a joint social with another uni canoe club or heading out on an Otley Run!
In December and May each year, the faithful club social secretaries organise the Christmas and Summer Meals. Traditionally in fancy-dress of a theme decided each year, we sit down for dinner and drinks before heading into town and a club, all for a scandalously low price. Venues vary each year, from barbeques at Weetwood to sit-down meals at pubs or restaurants, and dinner is accompanied by a short speech by the captain and (both serious and comical) awards and prizes to club members. Both dinner and club entrance (often with free drink) are included in the very low price, which will be given nearer the time. These are great events which shouldn't be missed!
The Sports Ball is an annual event held in the beginning of March each year. It is a formal dinner at which all the sports clubs in the union get dressed up in their finest dinner suits and ball-gowns and enjoy the good food and live entertainment provided by the Sports Exec. Tickets cost around £30, and for this you get a three course meal, wine, transport to and from the venue (usually the Royal Armouries in town) on buses and discounted drinks in the Terrace beforehand. The Sports Ball is a great opportunity for club members to dress up and let their hair down, and bad behaviour is not unheard of. A post-party party is often found at a club member's house, where the drinking can continue until dawn.
The Annual General Meeting of the Canoe Club in February is one of the biggest nights of the year, not just because it’s the night we all elect the new committee for the coming year, but also because it’s one of the messiest and most memorable nights on the calendar. The night is essentially split into two parts, all held at a fine eatery in Leeds with a luverly sit down meal and perhaps the odd beverage or two. The first deals with a bit o’club business, and then the second (the juicy bit) – elections for the next year's new committee. After all the speeches and awkward questions, the newly elected Social Sex choose a new venue to move the party to. The rest is up to you - photos or it didn't happen!
